I wanted to release this episode at this time of the year, because honestly for the past few years, even though things have grown, been better, and I’ve loved life more, during this time of year is when I have irrational feelings.

Not being good enough, "why am I creating?", and "what is the purpose of this?" are questions many of ask this time of year, so I wanted to address those and hopefully help some of you in the process!

Have you ever counted the amount of hours you've spent editing, and then multiplied it by the number of shoots you've done? The number is terrifying! When you see that number, you wonder if your time was worth it or if it could've been spent better elsewhere.

In this episode, I talk with Nathan Holrtiz, founder of Photographers Edit, a custom image editing solution for wedding and portrait photographers about how he built this business and helps photographers get their lives back! No more living life at the desk!

What would your business look like if it suddenly had 10x the clients you currently do? Would your systems, workflows and processes be ready for that?

Knowing your workflow isn't most attractive thing to work on in your business, but it's all about making profit while working less hours to live the life you want. This is the reason we go into freelance!

In this episode, Dave Shay explains the value of workflow and processes while preparing for growth and gives his favorite tips to get started.

Have you ever heard the story of the man who wanted to swim across the Atlantic Ocean? He wanted to swim from the United States to Europe. The story goes that he swam across and got tired when he was halfway. Then he decided to just swim back.

He technically swam the length he’d need to meet the goal, but his perspective and desire made it so he didn’t accomplish his goal.

We’re talking today about Momentum. Now, this may sound like a foreign term and not as flashy as Facebook Ads or a new camera, but when running a business, it’s important.

With everyone in the world having the same exact amount of time in their weeks, it's a curious wonder why we still often hear the question "Where do you find the time?"

Time isn't found, it's made.

In this episode I explain the first steps for understanding how much time you have, how you spend it, and seeing the bigger picture when arranging your schedule.

Should you set up your photography or creative service business up as an LLC, Sole Proprietorship, S-Corp or something completely different? When it comes to starting and running your business, often times the legal side of things is forgotten due to us being scared of choosing the wrong thing.

In this episode, Rachel Brenke aka The Law Tog (we love Togs around here!) answers those common business and legality questions for photographers and sets the record straight on how to manage certain things. We also dive into things like bylaws, contracts, contractors and other legal literature you can have in your business to make sure you're set up properly and secure!

Often times, it's easy for new photographers who are starting out to see a K next to another photographer's Instagram following or tons of comments on a blog post and think "they've never been where I am right now". As many of us know, that's simply not the case and the reality is that the successes shown in public, are the peak of mountains of failure and overcoming obstacles in on the way there.

In this episode, I chat with Amy & Jordan about how they got started, why photography was the career choice for them and the transition from primary photographers to educators.

There are few things more sought after in the photography industry it seems than the ability to travel the world, explore cultures, and simply getting someone to pay you money to get on a plane. Two Mann Studios? They've been doing all of that for years, and have even made it sustainable with two children who are in school!

In this episode I talk with Erika & Lanny Mann of Two Mann Studios out of mid-western Canada about how they became destination wedding photographers and travel the world with their cameras and family. We also chat about the logistics, know-how, and even some funny stories of what traveling as a family can really be like

Every freelancer does their job, starts their business and takes on their dream for the sake of fulfillment and joy from what they do. Often times our passion can become a chore, something we don't love doing and we stop connecting with our clients.

In this episode, Corinne Thompson, a Baltimore Wedding photographer shares her secrets on how she emboldens couples to be themselves, creates connections with them and leaves a lasting impression which both helps her brand and her bank account.

Every business owner knows, or eventually comes to know that if you don't get your money right, specifically profit & loss as well as your taxes, you're setting yourself up for some bad news.

I think every business owner should have an intimate knowledge of their numbers, what tax they should be charging and most importantly, what taxes they should be paying to the government. It can be intimidating of course, so for this episode we chat with Amy Northard, the CPA for Creatives about all things taxes, money, write-offs and how creatives and photographers should organize their money!

There is a deep and dark place so many freelancers and entrepreneurs get to during the journey of their business. That place is loneliness and depression. It's not talked about enough in our industry, nor any solutions to navigate our way out of it and become successful and more in tune with our businesses.

In this episode I talk with Robert J Hill, a traveling wedding photographer from Portland, Oregon about how he hit the peak of destination wedding photographer goals and how it cost him many personal connections. We talk about how to get out of these rough places, and lead your business in a way that focuses on fulfillment more than finances.

When it comes to pursuing passion projects, often times we don't know how to go about doing them and there's this tension between our "job" and our passion. For many freelancers, it's between two passions. Maybe the path to get to where you are has seemed unconventional, but the truth is it's that way for most people.

In this episode, Kristi Odom shares her story of first being an engineering student at Georgia Tech then photography taking ahold of her and never letting go. Kristi has been featured in Rolling Stone, The Smithsonian, Rangefinder, Fearless Photographers, even on a billboard in Times Square! She balances wedding photography with her passion of wildlife fine art and conservation.
